Heat Safety

During the summer months, the weather at Big Bend National Park can average over 100 degrees most days. Some parts of the park are without shade from the sun. It is important to be safe during the summer months from the strong heat.

Before Exploring in the Summer:

  • Carry plenty of water during hikes or other activities. Springs are very unreliable throughout the year.
  • Wear hats, breathable clothing, and sunscreen when hiking.
  • Avoid hiking mid-day during the summer. Heat can become unbearable.
  • Bring a packable shade umbrella. There is limited shade in some parts of the park.
